3rd, love “rejoices with the truth” (v. 6, ESV). “Rejoices” is from sugkairei, “rejoice with or together”( Concise Greek-English Dictionary, s. v. συγχαιρει ); “to enjoy a state of happiness or well-being together with someone else (Greek-English Lexicon, s. v. συγχαιρει). What are you glad about? We are to be glad about the truth. Love is glad when the truth is taught and promoted. Our gladness is with the truth, not without it.
Have you heard of people saying, “Well, let’s just set aside doctrines and just love one another.” But the Bible teaches us to seek after sound doctrine (1 Tim. 4:6, 16; 6:3; 2 Tim. 3:16; Tit. 1:9; 2:1). And agape love rejoices with sound doctrine. It lifts up the truth, and does not put it down. It proclaims the truth, and does not muffle it. It lets the truth shine, and does not hide it. Serving God in love means being glad that what is true is true, according to the Word of God.
Again, the verb, “rejoices,” is a present tense. We are to serve others while continuing to rejoice with the truth.
