I preached this Christmas sermon last Sunday, December 12, 2010 at God of Grace Christian Fellowship, Inc. (Independent Baptist), Escario St., Cebu City, Philippines.
When Herod heard about the wise men looking for a new born babe who is the king of the Jews, he was bothered so much. I can imagine that he couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking about it. Finally, he gathered all the chief priests and scholars of the Jews. He asked them one question—“Where is the Christ to be born” (Matt. 2:4, ESV). The religious guys gave him the right answer from the OT. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel’” (Matt. 2:5-6). They quoted from the prophet Micah in Micah 5:2 and they were correct. The messiah shall be born in Bethlehem. A great ruler shall come from a small town. The great ruler of Israel shall come from a little town of Bethlehem.
Today, we shall study Micah 5:1-6. I’d like to share with you three reflections about this great ruler from a small town. more
