The Christmas message began with prophetic announcements from angels. Matthew tells of an angel who appeared to Joseph in a dream, telling him that the baby in Mary’s womb is from the Holy Spirit; and that Joseph shall call his name, Jesus (Matt. 1:18-25). Luke tells of the angel Gabriel who appeared to Mary, telling her that she shall conceive a son and call his name Jesus (Lk. 1:31).
The Christmas message delivered an angelic announcement—an angelic assurance to the parents, Joseph and Mary, and an angelic prophecy about a son. Then there is the angelic instruction—they shall call his name, Jesus. Notice that it is not Joseph and Mary who gave Jesus his name. It is God who gives him the name, Jesus. It is but fitting that God gives the name, not Joseph and Mary. Jesus is indeed a son of Joseph and Mary, but before he was born, he was already the Son of the Most High . . . . more
