God is Exclusively God

Another implication of the character of God as the I AM is that we creatures of God should follow the will of our Maker. It is He who made us. Therefore, we should live in conformity to His will for our lives.

It is no longer your will, but His will. It is no longer your selfish agenda, but His agenda for you and the world. God takes pre-eminence above all else. He is your purpose in life. It is all about God then, not you.

The reason why you live a sad, disjunctive life is that you do not live according to the will of your Maker. You are like a car that runs like a motorcycle. You are like a ballpen that writes like a pencil. You are like an eagle that lives like a chicken.

You might ask, “Pastor, how do I live according to the will of my Maker?” First, find your purpose in God’s purpose for your life. God’s purpose for you is to know God and love Him with all your mind, with all your heart, and with all your soul.

Second, live according to God’s operating manual for your life.God’s operating manual is the Bible. Read God’s Word, know God’s Word, and obey God’s Word. If you obey God’s Word, you obey God’s will for your life.If you obey God’s will for your life, you operate according to God’s operating manual for your life.

My 6-yr. old daughter, Jan Marie, went inside the house one day telling about her talk with a next-door friend. Sto. Nino (the wooden image celebrated in Cebu City) is God, her friend told her. When God was a baby, He was Sto. Nino.

Jan Marie replied, “God cannot be Sto. Nino, because Sto. Nino cannot move and speak.” Her friend answered, “When in heaven, Sto. Nino will move and speak.”

I told Jan Marie to tell her friend that God is spirit and Sto. Nino is a piece of wood. I said, “Tell her next time that if Sto. Nino will move and speak in heaven, why can’t he move and speak here on earth?”

So many people today go to church, pray, and work without ever thinking of conforming their lives to the will of God. So many people think of God according to what they believe God to be—a piece of wood, a waiter they can call anytime when they want something, or a 911 operator.

But God is the I AM WHO I AM. If God is who He is, we should not make God conform to our beliefs about Him. Rather, it is we who should let God shape our beliefs about Him.
