There was Jacob’s return to Bethel. There was also the revelation of God at Bethel. First, there is a revelation of God’s Person.
- And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother. (Gen. 35:6-7, ESV).
Jacob now says, El-Bethel. Jacob does not say anymore, “Bethel,” house of God. He now says, “El Bethel,” God of the house of God.
What is happening with Jacob? Why is there a change of name? Jacob is growing in his spiritual life. He is growing in knowing God. He realizes that there is something more important than the house of God. It is the God of the house of God! He has moved up to the next level of spiritual understanding.
My Bethel is our old house at Homesite, Bacolod City. There, I heard the Gospel from our cousin, Elizabeth Alparaque. My Bethel is also Fellowship Baptist Church of Bacolod. It is the place where the late Rev. Jose Latorilla taught us the Word of God every Wednesday and Friday. It is the place where I grew in the knowledge of our God.
Maybe your Bethel is the place where you first heard the Gospel. Maybe your Bethel is the place where you were baptized. Maybe your Bethel is a Christian camp, a Bible study group, or a Bible-teaching meeting. That is your Bethel, the place where you meet God.
But more important than the place of God is the God of the place of God. I’d like to encourage you to meet God again. Experience God again. Open your heart and life to the Lord. Read His Word. Let the Spirit of God speak to you through His Word. God will speak to you and lead you to do His will.
I’d like you to make every day a day of experiencing God. Look out for the acts of God in your life. The acts of God are things that only God can do. Meet El-Bethel again.
