Note the following phrases in Ps. 46:4-7. In v. 4, “the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.” In v. 5, “God is in the midst of her.” In v. 7, “The Lord of hosts is with us.”
The emphasis is on the presence of God with the people of God. Now, the presence of God brings the power of God. “He utters his voice, the earth melts” (v. 6). The presence of God brings the protection of God. “The God of Jacob is our fortress” (v. 7).
Look with me in v. 5. “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns” (Psalm 46:5 ESV). The picture here is Jerusalem surrounded by her enemies, the raging nations. But because God lives in Jerusalem, God gives her stability. She shall not be moved.
In the morning, the nations march toward Jerusalem. But because God lives in Jerusalem, God gives her security. God will help her.
