In Matt. 5:20, Jesus said that “unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” In the next verse, v. 21, Jesus cites an example of the command against murder. In v. 22, Jesus explains the will of God behind that command. Jesus then clarifies it with two illustrations in vv. 23-26.
If we obey this Law as taught by Jesus, then our righteousness shall exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. If we obey this Law of Jesus, we show that God rules our hearts.
In Matt. 5:21-26, Jesus goes deeper into the will of God behind the law against murder. He targets the root of murder, which is anger in the heart. Hence, the will of God in the Law against murder is that we should repent the anger in the heart. According to Jesus, the internal attitude of anger in the heart is as liable to God’s judgment as the external act of murder. Thus, if we are angry at someone, God will judge us.
I’d share three key concepts from our Lord regarding anger management.
