“Women received back their dead by resurrection” (Heb. 11:35). In the Hebrew Bible, the widow of Zarephath received her dead son by resurrection. The widow lacked the faith to trust in the LORD. But Elijah cried to the LORD to give back the soul of the dead son of the widow (1 Ki. 17:21-23). The LORD heard his prayer and gave back the soul of the son. By faith, Elijah raised the dead son.
Another woman who got back her dead is the Shunammite woman. One day her son complained of a headache. He sat on his mother’s knees and died. The Shunammite woman went to Elisha and cried out to him. The widow of Zarephath had no faith. But the Shunammite woman had faith in the LORD. She said, “All is well” (2 Ki. 4:23, 26). Then she told Elisha, “As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you” (2 Ki. 4:30). That is a sign of faith.
Elisha prayed to the LORD. The LORD answered his prayer and restored life in the dead son (2 Ki. 4:32-38). By faith, Elisha raised the dead son.
Whether the mother had faith or lacked faith, the faith of the prophets raised their dead sons. Sometimes, it is not so much the faith of the receiver, but the faith of the giver of blessings that matters to God.
That is another attitude of faith. Faith believes God for the impossible to happen today—even the resurrection of the dead.
